Alexa Datt Steps Up to the Plate: Calling Cardinals Spring Training Games for FanDuel Sports Network
A Dream Realized: Datt Makes History in the Booth
Baseball is back, and this spring, a familiar voice will be taking on a new role for the St. Louis Cardinals. Alexa Datt, a seasoned presence on the team's pregame and postgame coverage, will be making history as she takes the mic for play-by-play duties during four Cardinals spring training games on FanDuel Sports Network (FDSN).
“It's an opportunity I've only dreamed of,” said Datt, reflecting on this exciting new chapter. “This ends up becoming a dream come true and to be able to do it with the St. Louis Cardinals, such a legendary organization, it doesn't get any better than that.”
First at Bat: Datt's Spring Training Schedule
Datt will be calling the action alongside analyst Brad Thompson for FDSN's inaugural spring training broadcast on Sunday against the Houston Astros, followed by Tuesday's matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. Both games are scheduled to start around 12:05 p.m. CT. She'll also be behind the mic for two additional games on March 8th and 13th, totaling four of FDSN's 12 spring training broadcasts.
Grooming Future Voices: FanDuel's Strategy
FanDuel is utilizing both Datt and Tom Ackerman, who has filled in for regular-season games in the past, to gain valuable play-by-play experience. This proactive approach aims to prepare them to step in seamlessly should the need arise during the regular season for lead announcer Chip Caray.
A Milestone Moment: Datt Blazes a Trail
Datt's play-by-play role marks a significant achievement, believed to be the first time a woman has called a Cardinals game on a local broadcast. While spring training stats don't officially count towards regular season records, this milestone represents a significant step forward. “I’m thrilled,” Datt shared, expressing her pride in this groundbreaking opportunity.
Inspired by Legends: From Costas and Buck to Waldman and Cavnar
Datt’s passion for baseball was ignited by broadcasting icons like Bob Costas and Joe Buck. Now, she finds herself walking in the footsteps of trailblazing women in sports broadcasting like Suzyn Waldman and Jenny Cavnar. “I’m humbled by this opportunity,” she remarked, “If the young girls who reach out to me asking for advice on sports broadcasting get to live out their dreams because of my opportunity, that’s the dream come true.”
From Orioles Fan to Cardinals Broadcaster: Datt's Baseball Journey
A Maryland native and lifelong Orioles fan, Datt’s career has revolved around the sport she loves. Her journey has taken her from covering the Nationals and Mets to hosting an MLB.com audio show and working with MLB Network. Now, she’s found a home in St. Louis, where she also covers the Blues. "I know baseball really well," she confidently stated.
Looking Ahead: Beyond Spring Training
While play-by-play isn't necessarily her ultimate career goal, Datt is embracing this opportunity with open arms. She credits FDSN executive producer Larry Mago for his encouragement and support, which included the chance to call several St. Louis University basketball games last season. “He’s believed in me since the beginning," she shared. As for the future, Datt isn't ruling anything out. "I'd never say no," she added, expressing her excitement for the games and the upcoming season.
