Yaniv Bazini: From IDF Service to NCAA Champion

A Halftime Ritual and a Championship Dream

The roar of the crowd faded as the scoreboard at WakeMed Soccer Park displayed a tense 0-0 halftime score. Yaniv Bazini, amidst the whirlwind of the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament, retreated to the familiar concrete walls of the locker room. The pressure mounted with each game, but his ritual remained unchanged. Before rejoining his University of Vermont teammates for the biggest second half of their lives, Bazini paused, brought three fingers to his eyes, and recited the Shema. He had no idea that upon his next return to that spot, he would be a national champion.

From Beit Hanan to Burlington: A Journey Forged in Passion

Bazini's journey began on the sun-baked fields of Beit Hanan, Israel. From age 5, he honed his skills with various clubs, including Sektzia Ness Ziona and Hapoel Rishon Lezion. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, his dedication didn't waver as he played for Yermiyahu Holon. His talent caught the attention of coaches across the globe, and his dream of playing in the United States began to crystallize.

The American Dream: Finding the Right Fit

After completing his Israel Defense Force (IDF) service, Bazini received a scholarship to play Division I soccer at North Carolina State University. "I knew I wanted to be a soccer player from day one," Bazini said. While NC State offered a strong program, Bazini sought a place where he felt truly valued. He found that at the University of Vermont.

"I'm so glad I found Vermont," he reflected. "It was for sure the best college decision I ever made."

The Catamount Climb: From Standout Player to Champion

Bazini's impact on the Vermont Catamounts was immediate. His game-winning goals propelled the team to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals in his first season. He showcased his skills further at the 2023 Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, a meaningful experience amidst challenging global circumstances.

“It felt so good to play and have this brotherhood with fellow Jews while everything was going on,” Bazini shared, reflecting on the games held two months after the attacks of October 7th.

Bazini's talent continued to shine, culminating in a remarkable senior year. He set career highs in minutes played and goals scored, solidifying his place in UVM men's soccer history.

Underdogs No More: Conquering the NCAA Tournament

The 2024 NCAA tournament saw an unranked Vermont team defy expectations. They embraced the "Cinderella story" narrative, using it as motivation to conquer ranked opponents. "They called us underdogs, so we crossed out the 'under' and just wrote 'dogs'," Bazini explained, capturing the team's unwavering focus and determination.

Bazini’s performance was crucial. He scored in every tournament game leading up to the championship, including a clutch game-tying goal that secured their spot in the final.

A Historic Victory: National Champions

The championship game against Marshall was a hard-fought battle. In sudden-death overtime, teammate Maximillian Kissel delivered the winning goal, etching their names in history as UVM's first national champions in any team sport. The stadium erupted, and Bazini, draped in an Israeli flag, celebrated the momentous achievement.

More Than a Game: Representing Community and Faith

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Bazini acknowledged the support of his Jewish communities in Israel and Burlington. He recognizes the significance of his platform, striving to be a positive ambassador, especially in challenging times.

"Since October 7, I have wanted to be the best ambassador possible,” he shared, emphasizing his commitment to showcasing the best of his people.

Before every game, at halftime, and after every goal, Bazini connects with his faith, reciting the Shema and offering thanks. It’s a testament to his values and the driving force behind his incredible journey.

Looking Ahead: A Future Filled with Promise

With the national championship secured, Bazini sets his sights on playing at the highest levels in Europe. Driven by unwavering dedication, he continues to work hard, eager to see where his passion for soccer will take him next.
